St. Francis Wood

St. Francis Wood is a destination neighborhood renowned for its fine reputation, large traditional homes, generously sized lots, tree-lined streets and for the prestige that it has always maintained.

The family-friendly neighborhood offers a community atmosphere with gorgeous parks, private tennis courts and the added benefit of excellent public transportation, great schools, and adjacency to wonderful West Portal Village shops and restaurants.  Residents also value its direct access to both 101 and 280 freeways easing commutes to SFO, downtown, the peninsula South & East Bay.

Incorporated in 1912, St Francis Wood was the first planned unit development west of the state of Delaware.  It was designed and advertised as the city’s first residential park. The sales brochure touted lots that are twice the size of the average city lot, lush parks, iconic fountains, boulevards designed by the Olmsted Brothers and streets lined with trees and plants. The majority of homes were built during the 1920’s and 1930’s in styles ranging from stately Spanish Colonials, grand Mediterranean mansions to charming Tudor cottages. To promote homogeneity of scale, color and style every home plan was built under the architectural guidance of the master architect, Henry Gutterson. That same vigilance to maintaining quality continues today under the watchful eye of the neighborhood homeowners association.

St. Francis Wood looks much the same as it did when it was conceived 100 years ago and people still choose the to live there for many of the same reasons.  Community life, enjoyment of the beauty of the neighborhood and the pride of knowing your neighbors is high on the list of activities.
