Sunnyside

Welcome to Sunnyside.

Established in 1891, Sunnyside is one of San Francisco’s historic planned residential neighborhoods, celebrated for its charming homes, leafy streets and enduring community character. Before its development, the area formed part of Rancho San Miguel, where open land supported agriculture and dairy farming. Real-estate entrepreneur Behrend Joost envisioned a new residential community and helped establish an electric streetcar railway in 1892, connecting Sunnyside with downtown and encouraging growth on San Francisco’s southwestern edge.

Development accelerated in the decades following the 1906 earthquake and fire, as families sought homes beyond the city’s more densely built neighborhoods. Through the 1920s and beyond, Sunnyside evolved into a distinctive residential enclave, with Victorian cottages, Craftsman bungalows, Mediterranean Revival residences and other early-20th-century homes creating an appealing architectural tapestry. Its rolling topography, landscaped gardens and gently curving streets lend the neighborhood a welcoming, intimate character.

One of Sunnyside’s most treasured landmarks is the Sunnyside Conservatory, an elegant octagonal redwood structure built in 1902 to house an inventor’s rare plant collection. Carefully restored through community advocacy, it remains a beautiful reminder of the neighborhood’s heritage and civic spirit.

Today, Sunnyside combines residential tranquility with everyday convenience. Monterey Boulevard serves as a neighborhood gathering place, with local shops, cafés and restaurants, while Sunnyside Playground and nearby green spaces provide opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Convenient access to BART, Muni and major roadways connects residents to downtown San Francisco and the wider Bay Area.

With its historic architecture, established landscaping and strong neighborhood identity, Sunnyside offers a particularly appealing expression of San Francisco living, balancing urban accessibility with the warmth and character of a close-knit residential community.
